Sweet Apple Quilt Block {Free Pattern}

Recently I was asked to make a pair of quilts for teachers that were retiring from my kids’ elementary school. One was actually the librarian and the other was the first grade teacher to my two oldest. Can you imagine retiring in 2020 during the Covid19 pandemic? I am sure they were heartbroken to retire without kids in the classroom.

The giver of the quilts suggested and apple theme. I drew up something that I could make pretty quickly and easily. I also considered how to use a lot of prints in the quilt. Scrappy looking quilts are my favorite and I wanted to include all of the fabrics!

After sharing the quilt on my Instagram page I was asked for instructions for the block. I am always flattered when someone else likes something I made enough to make it themselves! I was happy to write this up for the quilters of the world! You can adjust the size of your quilt by adding or subtracting blocks. You could even use the block design for a tote bag or pillow!

For my quilts I used a variety of reds. More than half of them came from the At Home collection by Bonnie and Camille for Moda Fabrics. I grabbed a couple fat quarters which was oodles for the green leaves. I chose a scissor print and a text print which are perfect for school teachers. I was lucky enough to find some Kona White for the background. (Remember it’s during a mask-making pandemic and fabric is not as available as we like!) And how could I pass up the diagonal strip from At Home for the binding? I just couldn’t! Since these were lap size quilts, I wanted the cuddle factor to be big. Because of this I chose red minky for the back and 100% bamboo batting from Winline in the middle.

What are your thoughts on minky backed quilts? My kids love them! I think if you are in a hot climate you might find it too heavy. Are you scared of using minky? I love working with it but there are a few things to keep in mind. I wrote a blog post all about it. You can read it here.

Sprial background quilting is one of my favorites and works really well with this quilt design. To contrast it I used straight lines in the apples. I love the way these quilting designs work together. This quilt would also look great with and edge to edge design. If you are interested in my longarm quilting services click here.

    1. Thank you so much for the really cute Apple pattern. Iā€™m currently trying to collect different fruit patterns for a wall hanging for my country kitchen. This would also make lovely table placemats.
